John Pierson, a former Air Force PJ and current member of the Air Force Pararescue Association, lives in Billings, Montana and makes his living in the cattle business. However, John’s true passion is playing the Great Highland Bagpipes. Combining his love of the bagpipes with his love of country and appreciation for freedom, John performs at gatherings that pay tribute to our service men and women.

As an Air Force Pararescueman with the 304th Rescue Squadron in Portland, Oregon, John served with ten men who lost their lives in service to their country. Remembering these men continues to inspire John and deepens his appreciation and respect for our freedom and those that protect it.

Both of John’s parents served as officers in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His mother, Lt. (jg) Sue Adams Pierson served in San Diego, California and his father, Lt. Cmdr. Verling “Whit” Pierson served as the Gunnery Officer aboard an aircraft carrier during the War in the Pacific.

Two of John’s brothers are also pipers. His older brother, Guy, is a former Army officer and, while now retired from piping, was the first in their family to play the bagpipes. His younger brother Roger is the second piper in the family. Roger served in Afghanistan with the Peace Corps in 1972 and 1973. Both John and Roger still perform together in honor of our Armed Forces whenever they can; gratefully remembering that freedom is not free.

John is a member of the Billings Caledonian Pipes & Drums and the designated piper for both the Yellowstone County Veterans Council and a Naval Reserve Unit in Billings, Montana. John can be reached at his e-mail address of PipingPJ@aol.com.
